For aspiring traditional musicians looking for the next step in their careers, Lews Castle College UHI is offering a £1000 scholarship to study in Benbecula in 2019.
The Uist Music Scholarship, which is possible thanks to an anonymous donation, will be awarded to one off-island student, and offers financial support to relocate to Uist to study for a minimum of one academic year on any of the three music courses offered at the Benbecula campus: HNC Music, BA Applied Music, or MA Music and the Environment.
The department has developed an international reputation for the delivery of traditional Scottish and Gaelic music courses, and a number of alumni and staff recently received recognition at the 2018 Scots Trad Music Awards in Perth earlier this month.
“Uist is a unique environment from where to study music,” explains Anna-Wendy Stevenson, Lecturer and Programme Leader on the BA Applied Music course. “Over the years the courses have seen many of the top names in traditional music hone their skills at the Benbecula Campus of Lews Castle College, studying with respected musicians and practitioners.”
“The experience is cited by many as some of the best years of their lives, living in a Gaelic speaking community and in a beautiful environment. This scholarship will support one lucky student wishing to move to the island to study – either on the HNC, BA Applied Music or MA Music and the Environment.”
