There a chance to study a Masters in Sustainable Rural Development for free with Lews Castle College UHI.
“At a time when climate change and the future of rural areas are at the forefront of national and global discussion our MSc Sustainable Rural Development has never been more important,” says Dr Michael Smith who leads this Masters programme from Lews Castle College UHI (LCC UHI).
The course, which LCC UHI have been delivering for 17 years, examines the social, environmental, economic and professional development in a rural context as well as community engagement issues.
The course is delivered from the main LCC UHI Campus in Stornoway but can be studied online from anywhere in the world.
LCC UHI and the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) are offering funded places which enable students to study full-time for free, for up to two years to complete their Masters degree.
In return for the sponsorship, the Masters students in receipt of this funding are asked to look into some aspect of aquaculture from the community aspects, to sustainability, to consumer aspects. A wide range of suitable research can be accommodated.
Dr Smith continued: “In recent years we have been hosting record numbers of students on this programme from across the UK and beyond and at one juncture last year we had students from more than nine countries represented on the course.
"During a time of climate emergency, it has never been more important for rural areas to build their human capital to facilitate the sustainable development of rural areas in an era of adaptation to climate change.”
SAIC works to bring together industry and academia to support all aspects of the thriving aquaculture sector in Scotland. SAIC MSc students get the chance to find out more about the sector, and to gain skills and develop networks that will support future career opportunities.
