Sight Action — Western Isles Sensory Centre, Stornoway, Eilean Siar
Salary £11.29 per hour. For 12 hours per week. (44 hours per month) the hours are worked as 4 hours per day for 3 days each week. Permanent post.

- Our field work services assess, support, and offer information and training to blind and partially sighted people of all ages, helping them to live as independently and as safely as possible.
- This is an exciting opportunity to join our support team and help people with vision and hearing loss.
We are currently looking to recruit a Support Worker based in Western Isles Sensory Centre.
As a Support Worker you will need a good understanding of vision and hearing loss and be able to offer support and demonstrate specialist equipment to blind/partially sighted and deaf/hard of hearing people of all ages and do simple repairs to hearing aids. You will also be required to oversee BSL classes and Lip-reading classes when they are running and facilitate support groups. On a monthly basis you may be required to attend the audiology clinic at the hospital to give support and advice to patients attending the clinic. A further aspect of the post will be attending the Eye Clinic in Western Isles Hospital in the role of Sight Information Officer to provide support, both practical and emotional, to patients attending the eye clinic, and also to signpost them to other available services.
You will also be required to act as driver / support worker to our Rehabilitation Officer when he visits the Western Isles monthly. This may be 2 -3 consecutive days each month and this is where you may need to work extra hours. These extra hours are generally split between both support workers to ensure each have equal opportunity for additional hours.
You will need to have a good understanding of common eye conditions, manage stock control, and have the ability to deal with members of the public, handle cash/card transactions, and have good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages. Excellent communication skills and record keeping are essential aspects of the role.
I.T skills are important as you will set up a rural I.T learning session project to enable people with sensory loss to fully access their I.T equipment. (phones, tablets, and computers)
