Pride In Place: Kenneth Burns is encouraging people to drop in

Stornoway Community Council has been successful in obtaining funding from the Pride in Place Local Board, allowing them to schedule four drop-in sessions events in Stornoway to feed into the consultation process for how the £2 million a year should be spent.

The Community Council wants to connect with all residents and particularly to encourage middle-aged or elderly residents to participate, as well as older and younger Gaelic speakers.

The Pride in Place funding in Stornoway is a £20 million long-term investment package provided by the UK Government over a ten-year period to support local regeneration and community-led improvements in Stornoway and Lewis.

The local group said they believe that while residents are generally proud of Stornoway, they will often have specific concerns about certain issues regarding road safety, parking, grounds maintenance, and the general state of the town.

Kenneth Burns, Chair of Stornoway Community Council said: “We don’t know how much of the £2 million a year of funding will end up being spent on Stornoway.  Our job as a Community Council is to give a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard.  We urge Stornoway residents to come in to our drop-in sessions, sit down and relax, have some tea or coffee, and tell us what you would like this money used for.”

The chosen venues and dates for the consultations are listed below:

  • An Lanntair  Sat 12 Sep 3:00—6:00 pm
  • An Taigh Ceilidh Tue 15 Sep 3:00—6:00 pm
  • Newton Ward Community Rooms Wed 16 Sep  6:00—9:00 pm
  • Failte Centre Thu 17 Sep 7:00—9:00 pm
