Harris Football Club have added another trophy win to their successful season, lifting the Eilean an Fhraoich Cup at the weekend after 15 years.

That makes two cup titles - the Moldova Lewis Cup and the Eilean an Fhraoich Cup on Saturday - as well as achieving their “highest position in a long time” in the league. And there are still three games still to play.

Club Treasurer Andy Morrison spoke of how “chuffed” everyone on the team was, along with devoted supporters, to see the club take the Eilean an Fhraoich trophy for the first time since 2011.

The club ended their trophy drought after winning the Moldova Cup in July, marking their first trophy in 15 years. Now, the celebrations will be bigger and go on for longer.

Andy credits the team’s confidence boost to their second title win of the season, but said management want to ensure the team recognise that "winning is not everything".

He said: “It gives them more confidence, you know. We lost four cup finals in a row, and that does do down a wee bit of confidence, even though we were very unlucky. But, winning is not everything and we always say that to everyone.

"It’s about getting kids involved at an early age here. But they’re being so supportive, and even seeing the pictures the other night of them all celebrating, it means a lot to them as well.

“It just gives the team more confidence to go on and hopefully this could be the start of a wee run, and we can compete for more things as the seasons go on.”

He called the Eilean Fhraoich Cup the "most prestigious" to win, saying that while it's a "special one" for all teams, Harris FC taking the trophy "means a lot to people down here".

Andy recognised Back as “great hosts” for the cup game, which had previously been rescheduled and actually took place three weeks later than the original date.

Due to prior commitments with the Ness Gala Day, the original location at Fivepenny pitch in Ness was unavailable, so Back Football Club hosted the final on home turf at Back Football & Recreation Club.

Moving forward, Andy adds that the team still aim to move further along in the Lewis and Harris Football Association league. However, he celebrates that this season will see the team “finish in the highest position in a long time”.

He said: “You know, we can always do better in the league and that’s going to be the main priority now is just to try and keep improving, expand the squad, do the best we can in the years ahead, and keep the junior side of it going as much as we can and then they can feed into the senior team in years to come.”

Talking about the team’s success, Andy credits their manager, Stevie Price. Originally from Gairloch, Stevie now lives in Harris where he has been for some time.

Andy recognises Stevie’s efforts in getting the team to where they are, adding: “He puts his heart and soul into it, so yeah, we’re very lucky to have him.”
