      Western Isles News

The Children’s Hearings System (CHS) is seeking new volunteer Panel Members to make decisions in the interests of infants, children and young people in the Western Isles.

The welfare-based legal system has launched its annual recruitment campaign for volunteers to join as more than 2,200 serve across the country – and is holding a number of information sessions for potential volunteers, starting this evening (Thursday).

Panel Members play a vital role in supporting children and young people by making decisions that uphold their rights and wellbeing during Children’s Hearings. Working as part of a panel, they listen carefully to those involved in the hearing and make legal decisions that will help shape a child's future.

CHS are looking for people aged 18 and over who can demonstrate empathy, compassion and strong listening skills.

They provide a comprehensive training programme, supported by an experienced team who will guide you throughout your journey to becoming a Panel Member.

The recruitment campaign runs until midnight on Wednesday 23 September.

To find out more about the role, the training provided and the difference you can make, visit www.chscotland.gov.uk  Applications can also be submitted through the website.

Information sessions are being held via Microsoft Teams for anyone interested in becoming a Panel Member. The first session Thursday 27 August from 6pm to 6.45pm and the second on Thursday 17 September from 12.30pm to 1.15pm.

Places can be reserved at the information sessions via the CHS website.

During the information sessions, participants will:
•            Hear directly from a current Panel Member about their experiences in the role.
•            Learn about the training and support provided by CHS.
•            Find out more about the application process.
•            Have the opportunity to ask questions.

Appointments are initially for a three-year term.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Siobhian Brown MSP, Minister for Children, Young People and The Promise, said: “Panel Members play a vital role in the Children’s Hearings System, listening to children, young people and families before making important decisions that can have a positive impact on their lives. It is a unique and rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in communities across Scotland.”

Anne Wilson, a serving Panel Member in the South East region, called the voluntary role “one of the most rewarding things I have ever done”.

She added: “We want to make a difference in the lives of children and young people, and serving on the Panel can be transformative in our own lives.”

In their recruitment campaign, care-experienced young people, known as CHS’s ‘Experts by Experience’ group, were involved in developing the new advertising campaign across TV, radio, print, social media and other formats.
