For many, the highlight of the social calendar year is the Barra and Vatersay Potato Competition, which takes place this Sunday afternoon (August 9) in the Castlebay Bar.

Known for its enduring a'peel', the family-friendly competition gets underway at 2pm, with the public invited along for a "smashing time", with live music, potato games, herring and burgers, and "lots and lots of Potato Love".

For those with an 'eye' on the prize this year, growers are requested to submit four or five washed potatoes at the bar between 5 pm and 7 pm on Saturday, August 8. Entries must include the entrant's name, the variety and where on Barra or Vatersay they were grown.

The competition is hoping for a big field in the hotly contested Barra and Vatersay Potato Competition.

Entrants for the Best Dressed Potato are asked to bring their stylish spuds to Castlebay Bar before 2 pm and indicate whether they are entering the junior or senior category.

Affectionately known locally as the "Spud Olympics", the much-loved competition has been running for over 20 years.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult and will be allowed in the bar between 2 pm and 6 pm.
