The MRI suite at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway is making good progress and remains on schedule for opening in September, says NHS Western Isles.

A major project milestone has been reached with completion of key construction work of the new MRI facility at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.

The project has now moved into its next phase, with specialist contractor Modus beginning work on site. This stage includes the installation of the MRI scanner and specialist shielding required for the facility. Preparatory work is underway ahead of the scanner’s expected arrival in August.

Following installation, testing and commissioning, NHS Western Isles aims to have the new MRI service operational by the end of September.

Gordon Jamieson, Chief Executive of NHS Western Isles, said: “Reaching this stage of the project is a significant milestone and I am delighted to see the continued progress being made towards bringing MRI services to the Western Isles.

“This investment represents a major step forward for healthcare in our communities, providing patients with access to advanced diagnostic imaging closer to home and reducing the need for travel to mainland hospitals.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in the project, including our contractors, clinical teams and supporting staff, whose hard work and commitment have helped keep the programme on track. We look forward to the service becoming operational later this year and the lasting benefits it will bring for patients across the Western Isles.”

Alongside the construction programme, work is continuing to prepare for the launch of the service. This includes developing clinical pathways and referral processes, producing information for patients and healthcare professionals, and ensuring staff receive the necessary training.

Demand for MRI imaging, says NHS Western Isles, is expected to continue to grow, particularly in areas such as cancer diagnostics where MRI is increasingly being used as a key diagnostic tool. The new service will play an “important role in supporting timely diagnosis and high-quality patient care for years to come.”
