      General News

With two Easter camps under their saddles – one in Stornoway and the other in Tain – the Western Isles Pony Club is raring to go this summer.

During the recent inclement weather, Pony Club members have managed to endure what feels like a long winter. Among the activities have been quizzes on equine knowledge, a triathlon of bowling, swimming, and running at Sporsnis in Ness, and pony club evenings, all aimed at getting members fit mentally and physically for this summer’s events.

The group boasts members currently ranging in age from 4 to 17 and abilities, with the support of the committee and family members.

The good news for parents is that pony club members don’t need their pony immediately. The club offers a riding membership alongside a non-riding membership and a family membership for families with more than one child who would like to attend.

The non-riding membership holds a great opportunity for those who wish to learn about the welfare and care of a pony before getting one themselves.

Over the summer, the Western Isles Pony Club has a range of activities planned, such as club rides in the Castle Grounds, jumping days, BBQs, summer camp and badge nights.

The Western Isles Pony Club, which dates back to 1981, is an official branch of The Pony Club, a unique youth equestrian organisation in the UK. Membership is available until members turn 25. Members participate in various activities, including rallies, competitions, tests, and camps.

The Pony Club offers the opportunity to compete in nine different disciplines, including Dressage, Showjumping, Eventing, Polocrosse, Mounted Games, Polo, Pony Racing, Tetrathlon, and Endurance.

Nationally, the Pony Club has been the starting point for most equestrian team members, equine professionals, and medal winners, such as Piggy French and Oliver Townsend. A pony club is a great way to create a pathway for a career in the equine industry.

Like every branch throughout the UK, training is at the heart of the Western Isles Pony Club. It provides opportunities to build knowledge on improving equine welfare and riders’ ability/safety, enabling members to develop lifelong skills alongside riding and having fun.

Members can accomplish a variety of achievement badges and efficiency tests and build up their membership with the Pony Club. It is also a great foundation for learning to care for your ponies and meeting friends.
