Two teenagers from Lewis are heading off to Orlando in Florida this week, ahead of the International Cheer Union world championships.

The championships start on Wednesday 24 April, and Bella Macleod from Achmore and Izzy Marshall from Broker in Point have both been selected to join Team Scotland.

Both have been working hard at home and with their national team to prepare for competition, which will run through three days, culminating in a parade of nations through Disneyworld on Friday 26 April.

The annual competition is celebrating 20 years in 2024, helping the sport to be recognised and practiced in 119 countries.

For this year’s landmark event, more than 70 countries are expected to be on site with live coverage streamed on the Olympic Channel at olympics.com/en/sport-events/2024-icu-cheerleading-junior-world-world-championships-orlando

The International Cheer Union (ICU) has succeeded in persuading the International Olympic Committee to grant full recognition to the sport, giving it eligibility for potential inclusion in the Olympic Games.

Both Bella and Izzy are members of the Stornoway-based North West Allstars at Sandwickhill Dance Academy, with all their fellow athletes wishing them well as they make the first part of their journey towards cheer stardom.

A spokesperson for Sandwickhill Dance Academy said: “We are so proud of how hard you’ve worked to get to this point, your coaches and teammates here at NWA and SDA are all behind you!

“Soak in every moment, take all the pics and videos and make the most of this incredible opportunity.”
