The future of the Lochmaddy auction mart is to be discussed tonight (Thursday, February 15) at a shareholders’ meeting in Carinish Hall.

The meeting has been called by mart operators North Uist and Benbecula Livestock (Marketing) Ltd in the wake of sales at the mart being axed by Dingwall & Highland Marts last month.

The company cited dwindling livestock numbers and costs for pulling out. The decision by the firm, which has run sales in Lochmaddy for many years, is a bodyblow to the local crofting community.

North Uist and Benbecula Livestock (Marketing) Ltd said it is “imperative” that shareholders attend tonight’s meeting to discuss the future of the auction mart. The meeting starts at 7 pm.
