Early travellers on the main A858 road through Carloway found the road closed this morning (Tuesday 5 December) after a car left the road in icy conditions.

Emergency services were called to the scene beside Carloway Bridge at 6.45am, when a car with a single occupant was reported to have left the road and rolled down an embankment, landing on its roof.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from Shawbost and Stornoway, together with the Stornoway station commander, reached the scene to find that the driver had got out of the vehicle himself. There was nobody else in the vehicle.

Police maintained a road closure and the casualty was transferred to Western Isles Hospital by Scottish Ambulance Service for assessment of his injuries.

The fire crews left the scene at around 8.40am.
