Lewis and Harris Horticultural Producers (LHHP) has secured funding for a new post charged with encouraging islanders to grow more food.

Money received from the Awards for All Lottery will be used to employ a part-time food co-ordinator / agitator to work in the late winter and early spring of 2024. The job will aim to promote the growing of food in polycrubs, greenhouses, and outside across Lewis and Harris.

Formed 25 years ago, LHHP is currently working with growers and interested groups in Lewis and Harris to resolve difficulties faced by small growers, such as those relating to the supply chain, and who to sell produce to and at what price.

The organisation believes that in a time of changing climate, variable fresh food supplies, and rising prices, small scale producers can play a noticeable role in achieving change. This could be through actions such as establishing honesty boxes, supplying local shops, or utilising the LHHP stall in Stornoway on a Saturday.

Previous projects undertaken by LHHP include collaborating with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar in 2013 to establish allotments in Stornoway. It has also offered advice and arranged meetings in rural areas across the islands.

The position of food co-ordinator / agitator will be advertised shortly, and interviews will take place in January.
