Westside football club has two cup finals coming up in quick succession, as the island football season draws towards its close in mid-September.

The Siarachs scored a 4-nil Lewis Moldova Cup semi-final win last night (Monday 28 August) and have already booked their place in Saturday’s Co-op Cup final, after beating Back 4-3 on penalties in that semi-final last Friday (18 August).

Fellow Co-op Cup finalists Barra had a convincing 4-2 semi-final win over Carloway on 19 August, and both teams will travel for the final in Benbecula, with buses booked to make the journey from Barvas and Barra.

The following week Westside are back on the pitch for the Lewis Moldova Cup final, to be contested against Back on Saturday 9 September.

Back received high praise last night from opponents Ness FC, who said after their semi-final defeat (1-4): “(Back) play the best football of any team on the island and deserved their win, sticking to their short passing game even when under pressure.”

Semi-finalists Stornoway Athletics were equally complimentary about Westside after they had succumbed to them, conceding four goals to no reply and describing Westside’s ‘clinical finishing’ and grip on the proceedings.

Meanwhile the Lewis and Harris FA league is moving towards what LHFA calls ‘the business end of the season’, with Westside and Back jostling for position at the top of the table.

The 2023 season is scheduled to come to an end on Saturday 16 September and league fixtures have been brought forward to 5pm to accommodate a new event in the island footballing calendar.

The football association plans a buffet for all clubs at Stornoway Golf Club from 8pm that night, during which end-of-season awards will be presented including to the league winners, player of the year, u21 player of the year and goalkeeper of the year.

An LHFA spokesperson said: “Without you all supporting, competing, sponsoring, refereeing and without willing committees, it would not be possible to run the competitions as we do.

“This is an opportunity to say thanks to everyone involved. Hopefully this will be a good night and well-attended. Should it prove successful then we will look to grow the event in the coming years.”
