A service of prayer and praise in connection with the death of Professor Donald Macleod will be held at St Columba’s Free Church of Scotland, Johnston Terrace (Lawnmarket), Edinburgh, at 3pm tomorrow afternoon, Friday 26 May,

The service will be conducted by the Reverend Alex MacDonald.

Evening worship will be held in the Free Church, Kenneth Street, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, at 9pm on Monday 29 May, conducted by the Reverend James Maciver.

The funeral will take place from the Free Church, Kenneth Street, Stornoway, at 2.30pm on Tuesday 30 May, following worship in the church at 2pm. This will also be conducted by Mr Maciver and, at Professor Macleod's express command, there will be no eulogy.

The burial will take place at Habost Cemetery, Ness, in the township of Professor Macleod's birth.

Refreshments will afterwards be furnished at Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, The Old School, Cross.

All the acts of public worship will be live-streamed.

The passing of Professor Macleod was announced on Sunday. He was aged 82.  

Born in November 1940, Donald Macleod was educated at the University of Glasgow and the Free Church College, Edinburgh. He was ordained in November 1964 to his first charge, Kilmallie Free Church, where he served for six years.  In 1970, Donald Macleod was called to Partick Highland Free Church, a bilingual congregation, where he preached five times a week, including two services conducted in Scottish Gaelic. The Free Church General Assembly appointed him to the chair of Systematic Theology at the Free Church College in 1978.

In 1999 he was chosen as principal of the College by the General Assembly, and in that role he spearheaded the College''s relationship with the University of Glasgow leading to the validation of the College''s degree of Bachelor of Theology.  In 2008 he was honoured as a Doctor of Divinity by Westminster Theological Seminary, USA. He was only the third Free Church minister to receive this accolade since 1945. He retired from the post of principal of the Free Church College in May 2010. Donald Macleod was well known as a former editor of The Monthly Record of the Free Church and as a former columnist in the West Highland Free Press and The Observer newspapers.
