An air and land search overnight on Friday into Saturday (5-6 May) brought all the coastguard rescue teams from Lewis and Harris together in Tong.

Police Scotland called for coastguard assistance after receiving a report of a missing woman, with teams including Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team, Scottish Fire and Rescue and the Coastguard helicopter R948 also joining the search.

The search of the area around Tong began at 10.30pm on Friday, with police making enquiries with local residents as a multi-agency search plan was put into action.

The operation continued until 4.30am on Saturday, when the missing person was found safe and well, and all teams stood down.

Stornoway police said there were genuine concerns for the missing person and that the incident could be regarded as a false alarm with good intent.
