      Stornoway, Broadbay & Lochs news

The Co-operative’s Macaulay Road store in Stornoway is to receive a multi-million-£ makeover later this year, it was confirmed yesterday (Saturday 6 May).

The investment at the 22,000 square foot store – the largest in the Co-op’s estate – is set to transform the shopping experience for its members and customers.

The store will undergo a rolling programme of works beginning in late summer, but will remain open throughout the refit, which will take around three months to complete.

The full details of the works are still being finalised and will be shared with shoppers once confirmed.

Co-op management promises the store will continue to operate as a community hub, with added services including its partnership with The Original Factory Shop, launderette service and online grocery deliveries via the Stornoway-based fleet of five home delivery vehicles, which cover around 100 sqare miles of Lewis and Harris.

The works will also include enhancements and a refresh for the popular meeting place in the coffee shop.

Stornoway’s Co-op store is the largest store in the Manchester-based retailer’s estate, and the complete store refit will be the biggest investment in Stornoway since the opening of a new £735,000 convenience store on Cromwell Street in November 2019. The Macaulay Road Co-op was built in the mid-1990s on a former playing field at a cost of around £5m.

Shopfitting specialists Weatherhead Shops Designers Ltd of Plymouth in Devon have reportedly been awarded the contract to carry out the refit, after completing the fitting of The Original Factory Shop franchise within the Co-op in 2021.

Work is expected to begin towards the end of August and will be phased over several months, with a predicted end-date in November this year.

Weatherheads hopes to employ local tradespeople where possible, to work alongside their specialist teams on the large and complex project.

Kate Graham of the Co-op operations department said: “We are committed to serving our Stornoway community, and our store is dedicated to playing an active role in local life.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to invest in transforming the store.

“In addition to creating added value through our membership programme, for both customers and community groups, we are working to develop the range, choice and added services to create a truly compelling offer.”
