A full-scale emergency was declared around Stornoway Airport this afternoon (Sunday March 26).

Just after 2pm, vehicles from the police, fire service and ambulance serrvice raced to the airport. 

The main road past the airport was hastily closed to all through traffic.

It is reported that the Western Isles Hospital was also involved in the alert as the local emergency plan was put into operation.

It is understood that the alert was sparked by fears of a gearbox fault in a helicopter operating at or near the airport.

The emergency vehicles started returning to Stornoway around 2.30pm and it is understood the aircraft landed safely.

No official statement has been issued about the alert and it is not known if it is related to additional activity created by the military exercise Joint Warrior which started today.
