Lews Castle College UHI HISA Class Rep Joshua Smith wins at sparqs Conference in Edinburgh

Lews Castle College UHI Highlands and Islands Students Association Class Rep Joshua Smith was announced ‘College Class Rep of the Year’ at the sparqs (student partnerships in quality Scotland)  Conference 2017, held in Edinburgh last week.

Joshua is a full-time student studying an HNC in Administration an Information Technology.

The award, which celebrates excellence in all forms of student engagement, is a wonderful recognition of Joshua’s commitment to developing the Class Rep system at Lews Castle College UHI and ensuring each student has their voice heard locally.

The Class Rep system acts as the first point of contact for students at each college and so is a key forum for each student to voice events they would like to organise, issues they need support with, and much more.

Joshua has been a Class Rep for the last two years while attending college and has built vital skills and confidence through the role, attending the HISA 2017 Regional Council on behalf of his fellow students where issues such as student funding, support and Brexit were discussed.

Delighted to have won the award, Joshua commented: "This award means so much to me, I never expected to win but I’m really excited now to keep going on the projects I’ve been working so hard on.

"I absolutely love being a Class Rep! I would like to thank all of the students, class representatives, staff members and my colleagues at HISA especially Luke, Maria, Max, Jamie and Sorcha for their continuous support throughout the past two years."
