Coastguard teams were called after reports of a car in the water at Cuddy Point last night.

Units from Stornoway and South Lochs Coastguard attended the scene at 7.20pm, accompanied by Stornoway Lifeboat.

They were able to confirm that the car was unoccupied, and its owner was safe.

Teams remained on scene to assist until car was retrieved.

A spokesman for Stornoway Coastguard commented: "Please be aware of the dangers of using slipways at low tide due to build up of seaweed and algae causing them to be very slippery. In this instance the occupants were able to exit the vehicle unharmed but the outcome could have been very different.

"In a coastal, beach or cliff emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
