Hollywood is coming to Stornoway with the launch of an exciting new dancing class.
Is the reality of life in a hum-drum world getting you down? Do you long for an age of glamour and excitement, when all the men wore hats and all the women's complexions were flatteringly monochrome?
Then step back in time with dancer Alex Jones as she teaches you to jive, Charleston and generally get all Fred and Ginger!
The Charleston is a fast paced dance, with elaborate arm movements which first became popular in the 1920s. Jive was originally presented to the public in 1934. It is a lively dance and uninhabited variation of the jitterbug, a form of swing dance.
In this evening class with Alex, you will learn the basics of both dance styles and some fun choreography to great tunes.
You will gain confidence, lose weight and tone up, whilst having a ball.
Alex Jones, originally from Liverpool, started dancing at 11, and gave her first professional performance aged 20. (You can watch it here. Alex is far left).
Since moving to Lewis, she has choreographed numerous performances, including the Commonwealth baton relay, and the Tattoo Festival, where local dancers were given the opportunity to show off their skills in front of hundreds of spectators.
Alex said: "Most of the girls hadn't danced before, and would never have dreamed of dancing in front of all these people.
"But my classes built up their confidence, and they performed proudly on the day."
This new class will be held in the Dance Studio at Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais, on Tuesdays from 18th April – 23rd May (6 weeks).
7 – 8.30pm
Admission: £36 / £30 concession
