Stornoway butchers Charles Macleod are heading for London after news of awards for their haggis and for their black and white puddings.
The iconic branded Stornoway Black Pudding produced by Charlie Barleys is through to the UK final of Delicious magazine’s 2018 produce awards.
It was named among Scotland’s 10 best products at the Perth Show on Friday August 3rd and will be up against the best in Britain at the finals in London.
The news came hot on the heels of one-star ‘simply delicious’ recognition from the national Great Taste Awards 2018, this time for white pudding and haggis.
Ria, one of the family business managers, said the awards were a breakthrough after several years of trying to educate the palates of England-based judges.
She said: “Historically we only entered our black pudding, but in recent years we have started putting forward the white and fruit puddings and haggis. There are a lot of regional variations with Black pudding and with fruit pudding, especially, it isn’t as widely available in England and there is not a real understanding of what the product is, so we were delighted to receive great feedback for the white pudding and haggis.”
This year, though, was breakthrough year. The white pudding was described by the judges as having an “inviting aroma and crispy appearance”, whilst the haggis received compliments like “an amazing aroma to this haggis. We love the texture of this product. There is a really sweet savoury initial flavour followed by a lovely peppery warmth. This haggis feels very comforting.”
The awards not only bring publicity to the Stornoway company, but help to reinforce Charles Macleod’s membership of the Guild of Fine Foods, said Ria.
And there’ll be still more chance to open up the south of England market when the company head to the Speciality Fine Food Fair in London’s Olympia from September 2nd to 4th, where they’ll be exhibiting as part of the Scotland food and drink zone.
