UHI Outer Hebrides’ BA (Hons) Fine Art alums are to showcase the work they created while studying at the studios of Taigh Chearsabhagh in North Uist.

Entitled Ritual/Rebellion!, the exhibition opening on Saturday, May 27, celebrates the unique and influential environment of the Outer Hebrides and the art graduates it has produced.

Originally established in 2006, the UHI course based in Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre has produced a wealth of talent highlighted in this retrospective exhibition.

Course Leader Rosie Blake said: “It is truly wonderful to know how many alumni have continued their creative practice, and this year’s group exhibition reunites graduates from across the whole span of the course’s seventeen years. Eighteen alumni will contribute work across a vibrant range of media and subjects, including drawing, sculpture, installation, painting, film and more.”

The theme of the Ritual/Rebellion! exhibition encompasses the repeated sequences and gestures of creative practice, a refusal of order, resistance to established traditions, and the urge to discover new pathways.

Rosie added: “All our alumni chose to study in this unique environment, and the rich history, ecology and deep time of the island are braided into their work in one way or another. The exhibition will draw together the work of this varied group of creative practitioners, reconverging in the locale which stimulated their practice during their study on the BA (Hons) Fine Art, and beyond.”

UHI Outer Hebrides will also present an Open Studio showcase of work from current students across the NC Art & Design and the BA (Hons) Fine Art. In this vibrant exhibition, you can expect to see a range of work across various media, including etching, collagraph, monoprint, photography, animation, sculpture, drawing, painting and more.

Works will be available to purchase, helping support the students’ creative practices.

The UHI arts programme initially ran in partnership with Moray School of Art, but in 2017 gained approval for the full four years to be delivered from the North Uist site.

The Ritual/Rebellion! - Alumni Exhibition opens on Saturday, May 27, until Saturday, June 17.

The Open Studio Exhibition also opens on Saturday, May 27 and will run until Sunday, June 4.
