New archive audio recordings of special interest to Berneray have been added to the Tobar an Dualchais ~ Kist o Riches website.

The recordings are of Lieutenant Kenneth Macleod, Berneray, some of which were captured at a welcome home party in October 1977 for the late Donald Alick (Splash) MacKillop and his wife, Gloria.

At the party, recorded by Ian Paterson of the School of Scottish Studies, Kenneth Macleod sings ‘Òran an Rèis Iomraidh’.

It is a well-known local song about a boat race and namechecks those who took part.

Kenneth Macleod worked on yachts in the 1930s, including the ‘Coila’ for some years.

She had a crew of 15, sailing mostly up and down the west coast of Scotland.

Kenneth was a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
