Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has commented on the Scottish Government's decision not to go ahead with the proposed Islands Bond scheme following responses to a consultation.
The Islands Bond scheme would have seen a bond of up to £50,000 provided for up to 100 households, providing financial support for island residents to remain in their community or to encourage people to move.
However, analysis of the Scottish Government consultation on the scheme suggested that the majority of island residents did not support the approach.
Alasdair Allan MSP said:
"I welcome the Scottish Government's decision to listen to the feedback from islanders.
"Depopulation is one of the biggest issues facing island communities, and anything we can do to tackle it should be encouraged. But policies need to command the confidence of islanders. The best approaches will be designed and delivered in close partnership with island communities and the government's decision reflects this.
"I hope that feedback and advice that has been gathered from communities over the past year can be harnessed into alternative policy measures to tackle depopulation."
