Fundraising by West Harris Trust for an all-terrain wheelchair to bring the beaches of Harris within everyone’s reach just keeps on rolling.

A raffle to raise the last £1,000 needed is gathering pace, having already shot past the original target.

West Harris Trust planned the raffle to top up money already raised through a charity art exhibition and from a £1,000 contribution from Crown Estates.

Local businesses were exceptionally generous with prizes and now tickets are flying out of the door – in an online world, since the raffle is being held through the trust’s beach wheelchair fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/WHTWheelchairFundraiser

On offer as prizes are a range of luxury items, home goods, and treats, including a hamper of Harris-made chocolates, gin from the Isle of Harris Distillery, and Harris Tweed accessories.

Special outings include an eight-person trip to Taransay with lunchboxes, flights anywhere in the Loganair network, and a meal for two at North Harbour Bistro in Scalpay.

West Harris Trust commercial manager Linda Armstrong said: Being able to visit the beach is one of life's great pleasures, though nearly impossible in a standard wheelchair. Through the provision of a beach wheelchair, we hope to make the beaches of West Harris welcoming and inclusive to all.”

The raffle is open now, with tickets at one per every £5 donated, and will be drawn at a ceilidh on Friday 26 August at Talla na Mara. Winners will be announced online and contacted the following Monday.
