The Western Isles Lottery team are sending their thanks to everyone in the community who participated in their week long, 5th birthday celebrations last week. Although the large scale event didn’t go without hiccups, Stornoway town centre was very busy throughout the Summerfest and dozens of businesses and charities benefited.
Stornoway Town Hall was packed to capacity with around 60 small businesses, some of whom never get the opportunity to showcase their products. The pier area, originally set aside for the Continental Market who failed to appear, held a mix of another 20 local businesses and charities ranging from a candy floss tent, to Face Painting, to RNLI fundraising stalls.
Jackie Keddie, organiser of Saturday’s Market posted on Social media, “We would like to thank the Western Isles Lottery for letting us be a part of your 5 year celebrations. We had a market today that was exceptional. There was a good buzz about town. You have done a fantastic job of putting on a week full of entertainment. Here's to another 5 years. And a big thank you to all the local crafter's for coming along, you really are a talented bunch”.
The Failte Music Club did a magnificent job entertaining the crowds in Perceval Square every day. Wednesday was the sunniest - and so the busiest – day of the week, with locals dancing to music in the square – it’s not often that happens!! The Junior Lewis & Harris Pipe Band performed on three days as did Sharon Mackinnon’s Highland Dancers.
Of course, the star attraction of the week was the arrival of the Funfair complete with the new Ferris Wheel which was packed by thrilled families throughout the week.
Emma Henderson of the Lottery Team said, “A lot of hard work and organisation went into our Summerfest but, despite the challenges of having to make alterations to the evolving programme, we are delighted so many had such a lot of fun and enjoyment. This was our aim, as well as giving a boost to the town’s economy. We successfully managed both and we send our grateful thanks to everyone who lent a hand!”.
Tony Robson of the Lottery Team said, “We are now busy organising the Festive Lights Displays and, although we won’t be repeating our Summerfest next year, we hope that another committee will be re-established to organise the traditional Carnival. However, we have also started the planning of a huge community Event for next summer, details of which will be announced very soon”.
