The Western Isles Lottery Team are celebrating their fifth anniversary next month (August) and have been busy organising a week of activities taking place around Stornoway town centre from tomorrow Monday 1 – Saturday 6 August.

The bunting has been erected and more than 80 small businesses are taking part in the Summerfest to bring another buzz to the town following this year’s Hebcelt.

A mega tent is being erected on the Pier on Monday morning and will be filled by a host of businesses and charities providing services throughout the week.

This is supported by a variety of food and drink vendors around the Pier area, all from across the Western Isles.

Tony Robson of the Lottery said “In the absence of a Carnival this year, we set about organising an alternative event to mark the Western Isles Lottery’s Fifth Anniversary. It is also an opportunity for us to thank each and every supporter who has joined us over the last five successful years of fundraising to enable us to make improvements in every area across the Western Isles. We hope the week will be enjoyed by everyone and give a healthy boost to the town’s economy”.

A variety of Craft markets will fill the Town Hall from Tuesday to Saturday with a café operating Thursday and Friday and Pursuit Hebrides will be erecting inflatables in Perceval Square on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons.

A Funfair opens in the Fisherman’s Car Park on Wednesday morning through to Saturday, complete with Stornoway’s first Ferris Wheel which is likely to be a big attraction.

Music throughout the week will be provided by the Failte Music Club and Lewis & Harris Youth Pipe Band will be performing three days.

Sharon Mackinnon’s Highland Dancers will also be performing at various times.

Janet Paterson of the Lottery said, “As well as having dozens of local businesses benefitting from the week-long Event, we’ll be delighted to see a busy town centre with everyone enjoying themselves – a Stornoway Summerfest sounds like the best way of doing it!

“Representatives from our External Lottery Management company, Gatherwell are visiting Stornoway next weekend to see first-hand how the local lottery is of benefit to the Community and will be featuring Stornoway in a national promotion to encourage further tourism. They hope to speak with a selection of those many organisations who have benefitted from lottery funding over the last 5 years.
