A new bar - pictured above today (Monday June 6) - is part of a rapid progress of developments at Nunton Steadings on the road between Balivanich and Linaclete in Benbecula.

Extensive work is starting on the exterior - and inside the shop creates a colourful array, there are regular tastings, and there's the new bar for anyone who wants a longer trial of the products.

Highlands and Islands MSP Donald Cameron has praised the initiative that is aiming to convert the traditional farm building into a new distillery.

It's already been announced that Nunton Steadings will receive £250,000 of funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to help owners Jonny Ingledew and Kate Macdonald of North Uist Distillery Co, take forward their plans.

Mr Cameron said: “This project will create new employment opportunities in North Uist and that is very welcome indeed.

“It’s also very encouraging that  the distillery will source traditional bere barley from the islands, creating a demand which will be met by local crofters,  as well as producing a distinctive product in the process.

“I would like to wish Jonny and Kate every possible success in their venture and look forward to tasting a dram in the not too distant future.”  The MSP has put forward a formal motion of praise to the Scottish Parliament.
