The public have a chance to see their new flock of councillors in action for the first time next week.
The Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will meet next week to choose a new Leader, a new Convener and new people to chair the various committees.
The Statutory Meeting of the Comhairle is on Tuesday May 17 at 10.30am where the Convener and Leader will be chosen.
There are then Committee meetings to select the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Education, Sport and Children’s Services (12.15pm), Sustainable Development Committee (2.00pm) and Transportation and Infrastructure (3.00pm).
There will also be appointments to Planning, Community Safety, Valuation, Licensing, Social Work and Social Care Boards and the Integration Joint Board (IJB).
The Convener of the Comhairle is responsible for civic leadership, including chairing meetings of the Comhairle, representing the Comhairle in civic and ceremonial functions, communicating the ethos of the Comhairle externally, and supporting high standards of conduct, values and partnerships both within the Comhairle and externally.
The Leader of the Comhairle has specific responsibility for strategic political leadership and direction, acting as the Comhairle’s principal representative on Local Government bodies, such as CoSLA, the Convention of the Highlands and Islands and Leaders’ Group, the Outer Hebrides Community Planning Partnership, and others, and in discussions with Government at all levels, the co-ordination of community planning strategies within the Outer Hebrides, and to encourage and support an inclusive political working environment. The Leader also deputises for the Convener.
