It could be you!  Ever sat around telling everyone how utterly useless the local council is? Well, now's your chance to prove how you can do it better. 

There's literally nothing to stop you…except maybe the sneaking realisation that it's probably more difficult a task than it looks. 

Anyway if you fancy trying convince your friends and neighbours you could do a great job as an elected councillor – and overcome the barriers which have seen the most recent council consist almost entirely of slightly more than middle-aged men, then the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - Local Government Election on 5 May 2022 is your date with destiny. 

The Comhairle is hosting briefing meetings for prospective candidates. 

The schedule of briefing meetings is as follows:-

Thursday 17 March  Council Chamber, Council Offices, Stornoway 4.30pm
Thursday 17 March Lecture Theatre, Sgoil Lionacleit, Isle of Benbecula 7.30pm
Friday 18 March Community Centre,Tarbert      12.30pm
Monday 21 March Microsoft Teams     7.30pm 

The information meetings will include a presentation on the roles and responsibilities of Councillors together with an explanation of the wider election process and will cover topics such as the single transferable voting system, the nomination process, postal voting, polling and count arrangements.

Councillors are to be elected for each of the 11 wards of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.  The number of Councillors to be elected for each ward is as follows:

  1. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Election Office at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Sandwick Road, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis or at the Area Offices:

(1)           Council Offices, Tarbert, Isle of Harris, HS3 3BG

(2)           Council Offices, Balivanich, Isle of Benbecula, HS7 5LA

(3)           Council Offices, Castlebay, Isle of Barra, HS9 5XD

These offices are open for the issue and delivery of nomination papers on weekdays from Tuesday 15 March 2022 between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

  1. Completed nomination forms must be delivered to the Returning Officer at one of the above addresses by 4.00pm onWednesday 30 March 2022.
  2. An election will be held in each contested ward and voting will take place between 7.00am and 10.00pm on Thursday 5 May 2022 
  3. Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer, 42 Point Street, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis by midnight on Monday 18 April 2022

Postal or Proxy Voting

  1. Any elector may apply for a postal or proxy vote at this election.  Applications for new postal and postal proxy votes, amendments or cancellations to existing postal or proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer, 42 Point Street, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis by 5.00pm on Tuesday 19 April 2022
  2. Applications to vote by proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer, 42 Point Street, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis by 5.00pm on Tuesday 26 April 2022.
  3. Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election, i.e., made after the 26 April 2022 deadline on the grounds of; disability suffered after that deadline (or, for applicants who suffered a disability before the deadline, their disability meant that they could not reasonably have made an application in time), work/service reasons, following Scottish Government advice or the advice of a medical professional in relation to coronavirus, being detained in a hospital under the civil sections of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 or for Scottish prisoners serving a sentence of 12 months or less, must reach the relevant Electoral Registration Officer at the address below by 5.00pm on Thursday 5 May 2022.  To apply on the grounds of work/service, the person must have become aware that they cannot go to the polling station in person after 5.00pm on Tuesday 26 April 2022.
