Creative Connections Western Isles – An Lanntair’s visual arts workshops for the Over 60s throughout the islands – returns with a new series of classes starting this month.

Open to anyone who feels isolated due to geography, disability or circumstances, and with funding from Inspiring Scotland’s Creative Communities programme, Creative Connections Western Isles provides creative and social opportunities for older adults with weekly workshops delivered both in person as well as via Zoom; and Project Co-ordinator Mark Jones on hand to answer queries and offer technical assistance.

There are six new workshops starting in March, taking place in Talla an Iochdair (South Uist), Taigh Chearsabhagh (North Uist), Grinneabhat Centre (Bragar), Uig Community Centre, and An Lanntair, as well as online.

Drawing And Painting with Fiona MacIsaac (from Fri 4 Mar)
Taking place in Taigh Chearsabhagh in North Uist and Talla an Iochdair in South Uist, enjoy the opportunity to explore drawing and painting in a free and experimental manner over the course of these sessions. Using a variety of natural and man-made materials, participants will investigate tone, mark-making, layering mixed media and more.

Concertina Book Stories with Elaine Smith (from Fri 4 Mar)
Join Elaine at the Grinneabhat Centre in an exchange of memories and stories, old and new about where we live and encapsulating them into concertina books using a range of mixed media approaches such as drawing, collaging, illustrating and recording through writing. The workshop welcomes anyone with just a story to share, those who love to get stuck-in to art materials and learning more about the people and place they live.

Printing The Beach with Gill Thompson (from Mon 7 Mar)
In this series of workshops held both in Uig Community Centre and An Lanntair, artist Gill Thompson will introduce you to a range of Printmaking methods, using sand and sea patterns, rockpools, pebbles and shells to inspire simple printmaking projects.

The Garden Is Where The Art Is with Kate Temple (from Wed 9 Mar)
Kate’s weekly online workshops focus on taking inspiration from our gardens and the plants and outdoor spaces near where we live. We’ll take inspiration from the plant world, to do a range of creative activities, including cyanotypes, anthotypes, some plant-based ink making and dyeing, and some plant drawing.

Music In The Making with Pieter Van Der Werf (from Fri 11 Mar)
Join Pieter online from his studio in Colintraive, and discover how music influences the creation of textiles, and make textile pieces inspired by your favourite music. During this six-week course we’ll use a range of styles: classical, opera, pop, 80’s, musette, folk, jazz and more. And bring along your own favourites!

Flights Of Fabric with Annabel Pattulo (from Thur 17 Mar)
With inspiration and guidance from textile artist Annabel, these online sessions will see you work with a selection of different fabrics and be introduced to a range of textile techniques like applique, layering fabrics and collage. Appliqué and collage are different techniques in which fabric is cut and manipulated into different shapes /patterns and sewn onto a larger piece of fabric to form a design.

Creative Connections Western Isles workshops are FREE to attend, but spaces are limited, and booking is essential. An Lanntair can lend tablets to participants wishing to attend online workshops, if required (limited numbers).
