Women who may be considering standing for election in local council elections in the Barra and Vatersay ward have a busy evening planned for them on Tuesday (18 January) by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

Prospective candidates in the Barraigh agus Bhatarsaigh ward are being invited to meet Comhairle chief executive and returning officer Malcolm Burr between 5pm and 6.30pm that night in Castlebay School.

But it’s also the night when, at 7pm, an online workshop is being offered by CnES and Elect Her, to inform and encourage women in the Western Isles to stand in the upcoming local government elections in May 2022.

The meeting at Castlebay School is intended an opportunity for all prospective candidates – presumably including women – to ask questions and to obtain information on the roles and responsibilities of councillors.

They will also find out more about the election process, covering topics such as the single transferable voting system, the nomination process, postal voting, polling and count arrangements.

Anyone wishing to attend should contact Marion MacLennan on 01851 822600 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to book a slot. There will also be further public information sessions in relation to the local government election run through Microsoft Teams, with details to be advertised in due course.
