Girls at The Nicolson Institute and Sir E Scott School in Tarbert have been given a taste of new ideas for sport and exercise over the past week (25-30 October), with challenging sessions built in to their day as part of Girls in Sport Week.

Branded with the tagline #SheCanSheWill, the Scottish Government-backed initiative has been run throughout the Western Isles by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s sports development staff, with the schools programme supported by Tech Mobile, who offered vouchers for participants in each of the sessions.

Coaches and club leaders have offered students the chance to try a wide range of sports for the first time, hopefully sparking new interest in participation and competition.

Girls at Sir E Scott School in Tarbert were up for a tough session on Tuesday (26 October) when former SES pupil Erin Murray of Stornoway Rugby Club team joined coach GG Campbell to give S1/2 and S3/4 girls an introduction to the robust and exciting team sport of rugby.

Meanwhile at Sgoil Lionacleit S3 girls had lunchtime football sessions and put great energy into rowing and tchoukball during their core PE sessions.

The pictures show pupils from Lionacleit getting to grips with tchoukball and netball, and the Harris girls being driven hard by GG Campbell, with the inspiring example of Erin on the Bayhead pitch playing rugby against Orkney last Saturday.
