Descendants of Barra emigrants are being urged to consider the island as their home – and to return there in 2023 to share the connection.

A Barra homecoming event is being planned for 4-9 June 2023 to mark a centenary of emigration to Canada and beyond.

Mass emigrations to Canada and North America took place throughout the Western Isles between the wars of the 20th century, with Barra islanders departing for Australia, New Zealand and North America, but predominantly for Canada.

Now Comunn Eachdraidh Barraidh ‘s Bhatarsaidh (Barra and Vatersay Heritage Society) plans to stage a programme of events to welcome Barra descendants back to the island of their blood.

On Monday 11 October an advance press release was issued, calling for descendants of emigrants who wish to visit the island of their forefathers to participate in this landmark celebration.

Anyone with an interest should make contact with the Heritage Centre by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Programme details and accommodation options will be forwarded at a later date to all those who register.

The pictures show island emigrants leaving Barra to travel to Canada on the Canadian Pacific Line’s SS Marloch, which departed from Lochboisdale in 1923.
