Barra islanders could be waiting until 2022 to get a mobile phone signal, as phone network EE still cannot restore their service in the island.
A public information-sharing group on Facebook details continual problems with call connection, dropped calls and failures in customer service dating back to April this year.
Posts on the page, ‘I live on Barra and my Orange/EE signal is down yet again’ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1380455702176880) include calls for islanders to band together and make sure that individual complaints are logged and collated, to strengthen the case for compensation.
Yesterday (Monday 11 October) EE reportedly advised Na h-Eileanan an Iar MP Angus Brendan MacNeil that there will be a further delay in fully restoring the Castlebay service.
Mr MacNeil described the update from EE as ‘very disappointing’ after he challenged them on progress to repair a long-running fault.
The mobile operator has advised Mr MacNeil that there are long delivery times on replacement equipment needed to restore the necessary microwave link. Their current estimate is that full service should be restored in the early New Year.
Mr MacNeil said: “This is obviously very disappointing news from EE. They say they are actively progressing a resolution to the ongoing service issues.
“I have asked EE to clarify why there is such a lengthy delay in getting the necessary equipment and I await a response.”
