Many people mark milestone birthdays by hosting a lavish party – but that's not my idea of fun at all, says Tony Wade, long-time Uig resident and manager of Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais in Stornoway.

So with his sixtieth birthday coming up in July, he decided to run away!

But it's all in a good cause…and one close to Tony's heart.

He explains: "I am one of those people who would run 100 miles not to be the centre of attention at a big event like that.

"In this case literally. My elder brother Ian was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010 and over the last decade has done some amazing physical challenges. These include completing The Pennine Way long distance footpath and is part of a research project based in Newcastle.

So Tony decided to do 100 miles in seven days finishing on his 60th birthday on 17th July which "is pretty inconsequential by comparison."   This is on Lady Anne’s Way – Lady Anne Clifford was a proto feminist and quite a woman, who renovated a number of castles and ran the estates after being disinherited.

"I plan to run as much of the route from Skipton to Penrith as possible - and it passes Ian’s front door, so it seems very appropriate."

It's not going to be as easy as it sounds, though - and it doesn't sound that easy.  Why?  Because he's been behind his sports centre desk for so long.

"I haven’t run that far in a week since I was 34 and actually training," confesses Tony.

But the pain will be worth it for Parkinson’s UK, "as like all large charities they have suffered massively over the last year because of the loss of large fundraising events like The London Marathon, Great North Run etc."
