You can’t beat a cracking picture of a beautiful Western Isles beach – unless it’s with another cracking picture of a beautiful Western Isles beach.

Happy snappers around the islands are being challenged to put their favourite beach to the fore, as online forecasting service Western Isles Weather began their annual ‘best beach in the Western Isles’ competition at the weekend.

Of the six shortlisted pictures open for votes, this stunning image of Swainbost beach, taken by Scott Davidson, won round one of the competition, capturing 117 votes across Facebook and Twitter by the time voting closed last night (Sunday 28 February)

The vibrant sunset colours helped the photographer beat Carol Ferguson’s bright and breezy image of Riof beach by just nine votes.

From today (Monday) images of beaches on the Isle of Harris can be submitted to the competition at https://www.facebook.com/WesternIslesWeather, with six impressive pictures to be put up for public judging next weekend.

The competition’s profile has been raised this year, with the winner of the best beach in the Western Isles competition winning a treat box from MC Makes, and Traigh Mhor Art offering to make a painting of the winning image to be auctioned for charity.

Each large island in the Western Isles gets their turn for photographers to showcase the beauty of the beaches, and winners from each round will go into a grand final in a few weeks time.

Scott Davidson’s capture of oystercatchers at Swainbost also featured on the Western Isles Weather page this week.
