Angus MacNeil, MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, has opened up his constituency office as a donation drop off point for Eilean Siar Foodbank in the run up to Christmas.

Eilean Siar Foodbank are working hard to provide food packages for islanders facing crisis situations and the weeks before Christmas are one of their busiest periods.

Mr MacNeil’s office at 31 Bayhead, Stornoway, will be a drop off point for donations of non-perishable items from now until December 20th. A box is located in the reception area and donations can be dropped off between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday. This will complement a collection taking place in Stornoway’s Tesco store between November 29th and December 1st.

Mr MacNeil said: “It is shocking that between April 1st and September 30th this year, nearly 300 emergency 3 day food packages were given out to island residents who find themselves in a crisis situation. This included 80 packages for children.

“Eilean Siar Foodbank need to replenish supplies to allow them to assist families in crisis for the year ahead.

“I would urge people to support the Tesco store collection but if you can’t make it, please do drop off donations to my office in the coming weeks.”

He added: “I visited the Foodbank recently and met with the volunteers who work extremely hard to provide a service for those in our community who are most in need. I am pleased to be able to help in some small way.

“I have regular communications from the Trussell Trust, who support Eilean Siar Foodbank, who are campaigning for changes to the welfare system to mitigate the negative impact on communities, families and individuals which often lead to people finding themselves in crisis situations where they have no choice but to use a foodbank.”
