Power engineers worked into the early hours of this morning (Friday September 28th) to get power reconnected to the Back district, after last night’s road-closure and power-cut crisis.
On a wet road, with standing water, a single car hit a power pole near the Golden Sands caravan park around 9.20pm last night (Thursday September 27th), bringing down the pole, transformer and power lines across the main road near Back Football Club and plunging more than 700 homes into darkness.
With live main power lines crossing the carriageway, police had to close the road for some time, stranding motorists and bus passengers.
The road was reopened around midnight, although some traffic was allowed to pass from 11.30pm onwards.
A team of engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks started work at the site at 10pm and were on site until after 5am today making all safe.
Power was restored to all customers by 3.30am.
The driver was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.
