The doorstep collectors of Cancer Research UK’s Isle of Lewis committee will be out in force from Monday August 20th for two weeks, as the big annual fundraiser gets underway.
A total of 120 collecting cans have been given out to committee members, stalwart supporters and new collectors, with almost every area of the island expected to be covered during the fortnight to September 1st.
Committee chairperson Amy Macaulay said the door-to-door collection is one of the most productive events of the year. “Last year we raised almost £15,000 during the fortnight. People are very supportive and it’s a great opportunity for us to get to people who we may not otherwise see during our fundraising events. Some of our collectors use it as a social opportunity, a chance to visit people and have a chat as well as to raise money for the fund.”
There are still a few gaps in this year’s coverage, with collectors needed in Carloway, parts of Lochs including Balallan and Leurbost and in town around Columbia Place and Lewis Street. For this year there’s also a couple of gaps in Tong and Back, where regular collectors are temporarily unavailable.
Amy said: “We try to get to every house, although obviously it depends on whether people are at home. If anyone would like to help us, even with a small area where we don’t yet have cover, we would be very grateful.”
All collectors carry official identitification and committee members will be wearing branded fleeces. If you think you can help out with the collecting contact Amy Macaulay on 706151 or vice-chairperson Ishbel Mackay on 870694.
