Dominating the Atlantic horizon today (Saturday May 11) - in clear sunlight off West Lewis - was the Rio Blackwater, en route from Hamburg in Germany to Tuxpan in Mexico, where it is expected to arrive in 11 days time. 

The 275m long vessel was travelling at 15-20 knots on the eastern edge of the Atlantic deepwater passage past the Hebrides.

The container ship's cargo was was described on shipais.com as carrying hazard A cargo - that is, rated as a major hazard to life.

Built in 2000, the vessel is 68,122 dwt - that is the amount of cargo, ballast, fuel and so on that it can carry.
