Trading standards are warning local businesses to be aware of charity publishing scams which ask for sponsorship for booklets which they claim are going to be distributed to local schools.
Scammers, often based in the North West of England usually with 0151 or 0161 telephone numbers, phone and ask businesses to sponsor school books on topics such as road safety, drug awareness, child safety initiatives or similar.
In order to make the scam sound more convincing the caller may say that the books are being published on behalf of a Police or a Fire Brigade charity.
Businesses may also receive calls, e-mails or invoices looking for payment for advertising or sponsorship which the caller claims you, or someone in your Company, has previously agreed to.
Please report any scams or suspicious activity in the Western Isles to Trading Standards on 01851 822694.
