Stornoway Coastguard rescue helicopter R948 was sent to the rescue of an elderly lady who had fallen ill aboard a cruise ship in the Minch yesterday evening (Sunday July 7th).

The 85-year-old lady was one of 2,500 passengers aboard the German cruise vessel Mein Schiff 5, which was heading north through the Minch en route between Edinburgh and Orkney.

Stornoway Coastguard operations centre took a call for help at 7.45pm last night, and tasked the helicopter to lift the casualty from the deck. Stornoway Coastguard Rescue Team were also called to man the helicopter landing site, but the woman was instead taken on to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

All teams were stood down at 11pm last night.
