Smoked salmon produced in the Uig area of the Isle of Lewis has been named as the UK’s “best fish and seafood product” in the Great British Food Awards, sponsored by the magazine of the same name.
The chief judge, author and food writer Elly Curshen, described it as “perfect smoked salmon. All the things that matter to me – texture, taste, smoke level and thickness – are spot on. A top class product and a real treat to eat”.
Uig Lodge Smoked Salmon is produced from locally farmed fish in one of the most stunningly beautiful locations in the Hebrides. The small, artisan smokehouse has operated since 1984 and has built a reputation for high quality products based on low-volume production.
Dickon Green, who owns the business, said: ‘It is very exciting to have won this prestigious award and I thank the whole Uig Lodge team for the skill and dedication they have shown over the years. Hopefully, this recognition will open up more opportunities as we look to further develop the business in the years ahead.”
The award-winning product is delivered all over the UK with a growing number of customers further afield. Five star clients include Rules Restaurant in London, St Andrew’s Links Golf Club, Boath House Hotel in Nairn and Valderama golf resort in Spain.
Uig Lodge, which has been in the Green family since 1981, caters for fishing parties, family holidays and B&B guests while a restaurant, which will showcase the award-winning smoked salmon and other local products, is currently under construction, with stunning views over Uig Sands. It is expected to be fully operational by next spring.
The business employs local staff and Mr Green paid particular tribute to two of the longest serving employees – Kenny MacKay and Annie Smith. He said: “Everything is done by hand and with great attention to detail. The knowledge and commitment of the staff to the quality and presentation of the end product are crucial to our reputation”.
Uig Lodge Smoked Salmon is no stranger to awards. On three occasions it has been awarded three gold stars at the Guild of Food Great Taste Awards and in 2014 was named their Speciality Product of the Year. It has also been nominated by the UK Government’s DEFRA as one of the country’s 50 “Foodstars”.
