The first event on Tuesday January 1st 2019 to make the centenary of the HMY Iolaire disaster takes place in Tarbert.
It is timed to start at 1.45am, just before the time at which the doomed yacht struck the rocks of the Beast of Holm, not far from Stornoway,
John Murdo Morrison said: “It is our duty to commemorate this horrific incident when so many islanders, having survived the horrors of World War One, lost their lives within sight of the shores of home.”
In all, seven men were lost from Harris and its associated islands. These were Finlay Morrison, aged 25, from Scalpay; Donald Paterson, aged 18 and Norman Mackillop, also 18, from Berneray; along with Norman Mackay, 18, Leverburgh; Kenneth Maclean, 18, Northton; Farquhar Morrison, 35, Stockinish; and Finlay Maclennan, 21 Meavaig.
The commemorative event will take place at Harris War Memorial at 0145hrs and is expected to include relations of those who were lost – and also of those who survived. Those were John Mackinnon; Robert Mackinnon; Alexander Campbell; and John MacCuish.
There will be pipers on parade and wreaths will laid by groups and families.
