As a result of the continuing support for The Western Isles Lottery from residents in Barra &. Vatersay, Volunteers from Northbay Gardens (“the Garadh”) were delighted to receive a cheque for £1,000 to help them continue their excellent work.

Gàradh a’ Bhàgh a’ Tuath is a horticultural-based project . Volunteers grow and sell local produce whilst helping people with Additional Support Needs and reducing the carbon footprint of the local area. They love working on projects that improve the environment and health of the area through a range of activities including community gardening and conservation.

Angie Foster, a Trustee of the Charity said: "The award was for planting areas in Barra with seasonal colour at the School, local churches and Community Halls. We also provide floral displays for events such as the recent Fisherman’s Mass. These expenses would normally have to be covered at a cost to the charity, so the funding from the Western Isles Lottery was very gratefully received.”

The Award from WILL follows the announcement of the Charity receiving the prestigious Queen’s Award 2019 for providing supported access to a therapeutic garden and a dementia friendly café. This is a fantastic achievement and Congratulations goes to everybody involved from the Western Isles Lottery Team.

The Lottery Team are grateful to Coimhearsnachd Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh (Barra & Vatersay Community) Ltd who manage the Lottery funds in the area. A further £2,500 will be shared between another two local groups this month bringing the amazing total raised by Supporters of the Lottery in the area to £9,432.

The proceeds from every Lottery ticket purchased by residents of Barra are returned to their own Area - and the pot soon mounts up! Any voluntary group in the area is welcomed to apply for funding and folk can join the Lottery at www.westernisleslottery.co.uk
