The Anchorage restaurant in Leverburgh has today (Thursday July 11th) announced the launch of an art and photography competition for all ages.

It’s the second year for the competition, which drew tremendous enthusiasm from visitors and locals alike last summer.

Primary age children are asked to produce an artwork in any medium, and secondary age children a digital photo, which reflects the theme ‘island life’. Meanwhile adults are encouraged to take a digital photograph on the theme ‘around the Anchorage’.

Prizes include sweetie hampers for the youngsters and vouchers for older children and adults, with the adult prizewinner seeing their picture used as part of the restaurant’s 2020 advertising.

Anchorage owner Sally Lessi told welovestornoway.com today: “The winner of last year’s competition, Lukas Hajek, saw his picture used in Loganair’s in-flight magazine and other publications, as well as on our poster, so it has given him tremendous exposure.

“Entries by the younger kids were absolutely fantastic, so imaginative. Artists Willie and Moira Fulton helped me with the judging, which helped me to focus on the artistic merits of the entries as well as just being blown away by the ideas.”

Sally says the intention of holding the competition in the summer is both to provide something artistic for local youngsters to do, and to focus their attention on really seeing their environment, instead of being hooked into online activities.

She said: “We found that young ones were coming and spending a day really looking at things on the beach, so they were having a more intense, direct experience. I hope it enhanced their own feelings about summer in Harris, whether this is their home or they were here on holiday.

“It was also great for us to see how we are viewed in the community and the ways in which photography and art can reflect those feelings.”

The competition closing date is August 5th at 5pm and you can find full details of age categories and prizes on the Anchorage Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/theanchorageisleofharris/
