Some of the most important bits of kit to have your boat - a VHF radio, EPIRB and PLB!
Stornoway Fishermans Co-op have a wide range of both handheld and fitted VHF radios. With the handheld or portable sets you can choose from ones that are waterproof, float and some also have the DSC function (Digital Selective Calling). They also stock VHF sets to be fitted inside by the wheel of the boat. As we all know mobile signal is a bit patchy and can't be relied on so a good working VHF is essential if you need to raise the alarm or need to contact other vessels in the area.
You can also find EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and PLBs (Personal Locator Beacon). An EPIRB is attached to your boat and sends out a distress signal for rescuers to locate you in an emergency situation. They have saved many lives since their creation in the 1970s. A PLB works the same way but is attached to a person so smaller in size, great for locating a man over board but also a good safety device for kayakers or other small one person craft, and swimmers if they get in to difficulties.
