Harris Dementia Group was chosen as one of three finalists in the category of Best Community Support Initiative, in Scotland's Dementia Awards 2015.

Members of the HDG attended the award ceremony in the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow on 24th September, and, although beaten by Fit for Life from Fife, they were delighted to have been selected as finalists from nearly 100 nominations for this year's awards.

The Group was formed last year by Harris Voluntary Service and Western Isles Community Care Forum, and is supported by Alzheimers Scotland, Leverburgh Care Home, Harris House, Community Education and Crossroads (Harris).

Harris Dementia Group has established 'Musical Memories', a monthly musical get-together, due to the benefits gained from singing for those living with Dementia. It is also an opportunity for those with dementia, and their carers, to gather together socially.

Musical Memories meets on the last Thursday of the month (except December) in the Tarbert Community Centre from 2pm to 3.30pm. A dementia support worker is on hand at each session to give advice, and folk can enjoy a cup of tea and cakes with friends whilst joining in the singing.

The next important date in the calendar for Musical Memories is their Christmas Concert on 26th November in Tarbert Community Centre at 2pm to which is everybody is warmly invited.
